Fontana Secures $19.8 Million Grant for Critical Road Safety Improvements
FONTANA – The City of Fontana is pleased to announce the successful award of a $19,808,986 grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Safe Streets and Roads for All program for the Foothill Blvd Saftey Improvement Project. The funding represents a significant portion of the resources needed to complete the project. It will enable the city to embark on a transformative project aimed at enhancing safety for motorists, pedestrians, and bicyclists along Foothill Boulevard, a vital stretch of historic Route 66. Over the past six years alone, this area has tragically witnessed eight fatalities, compelling the City of Fontana to prioritize comprehensive safety improvements. The project includes the construction of 1.75 miles of Class II buffered bike lanes, 1.5 miles of ADA-compliant sidewalks, including curb and gutters, 13 ADA-compliant ramps, street lighting, a landscaped median, traffic signals, and signage. "Such accomplishments are the result of collaborative efforts, and it requires a team with a shared vision. Secretary of Transportation, Pete Buttigieg, played a crucial role in securing the funding, and his dedication is greatly appreciated. This would not have been possible without the diligent efforts of our legislative partners," said Mayor Acquanetta Warren. The Foothill Blvd Saftey Improvement Project addresses a critical gap in active transportation infrastructure, connecting residents through safer transportation modes to public transit, regional trails, and employment opportunities. Fontana's commitment to a 30% overmatch for this project underscores its dedication to achieving zero serious injuries or fatalities, supported by evidence-based crash reduction factors associated with the proposed changes. “I want to express heartfelt gratitude to the U.S. Department of Transportation, Secretary Pete Buttigieg, and Congresswoman Norma Torres and Representative Pete Aguilar for championing our commitment to creating a safer, more connected, and vibrant community. This grant marks a substantial milestone in Fontana's journey toward achieving its safety goals and fostering a more sustainable and inclusive city,” said Fontana City Manager, Matthew Ballantyne. Project construction is expected to commence in July 2025, and is expected to be completed by July 2026. |
